Reflect + Rebirth

December 31, 2011

There’s something about a culmination of a years accomplishments that brings out seldom seen character traits in humans. We make resolutions to live better, eat better, strive for everything closer to what we deem as perfection. The first of January marks a mental milestone for many folks around the world with good intentions. If you choose to live your life the way you did the previous day – more power to you. For the folks who strive for a change, best of luck in maintaining the resolution but lets not let one day of the year strive for us to grow. 2011 was amazing but 2012 has much to teach.

With that out of the way, here’s a 16 track compilation for you to get fitted for an epic evening with family and friends, for you to throw up and swear for change the next morning, for you to reflect and rebirth. Just a little taste of 2011 and what’s in my iTunes. Get it here.

First Article – The Road Ahead

September 5, 2011

Big things happening on the horizon. The crew and I at PLSTK are on the verge of releasing something near and dear to our hearts. We’ve always had a passion for footwear and design. These two loves come together birthing a brand we engendered called First Article. Seen below are just two catalyst components of the brand. The time spent working on the shoehorn and limited release cap (a co-op with a good friend and brand lead at Quintin, Brett) was enriching. I keep you in suspense as our seasons silhouettes are not public facing yet. I assure you – the work put behind this season will not disappoint. Read more about PLSTK and our current projects here. Enjoy.

Healthy Hustle: Gus of Harputs

September 5, 2011

It’s with great honor to time the PLSTK blog release with the Healthy Hustle SF installment featuring Gus of Harputs. The homie Sean of Metrospective Media flew into SFO, took less than a week to capture all footage, and brought it back to the lab in the East Coast to put together a coherent story for the public. Before you is the conclusion of our collaborative thoughts and the beginning of yours.

In 1978, a family business named Harputs emerged from Oakland, California pushing the sales of B-Boy classic Adidas Shelltoes and jumpsuits. Thirty-three years later, the maturity of their exclusive Adidas footwear alignment transformed the family business, moving their primary location to the heart of San Francisco. Harputs has now expanded to carry all inventory including prior brands and designs from Yōji Yamamoto, Martin Margiela, Stephan Schneider, Comme des Garçons, as well as their own line – Harputs OWN. In this installment, Gus explains his theory on “gypsy retail”, introduces us to his mentor / tailor, and previews some of OWN’s pieces.

First Article type logo / insigina

September 5, 2011

Under the font house moniker, Commercial Type, Berton Hasebe and Christian Schwartz collaborated on the design of Stag Stencil in 2008. Formula One magazine in Europe enjoyed Stag so much, they commissioned a stencil version. This was a relatively late edition to the already well established Stag font family in 2005. Though trailing its ancestors by three years, the addition was natural to the family. Stag Stencil takes the masculinity of the original slab serif and juxtaposes its characters by giving it a clean yet guerrilla marketing stencil-ready approach.

Now that we have a bit of the history covered: the very font discussed above was used to create the First Article logo and insignia. The ligatures in the family are stellar and yielded exceptional results. The joy of this versatile font made it legible at any scale – paragraph reading as a serif and large scale reading as a slab stencil. Stag Stencil is a beautiful stand-alone font and the only augmentation needed for the typography logo was to remove the ascenders in the “t” and “i” to establish body relationship through a clean x-height. The tracking and kerning was visually natural, and something about lower case logos makes the brand earnest and humble.

The First Article insignia came as an instinctual thought as the “f” with its long stem, and an “a” with its open counter, made a memorable and playful pairing. The f’s shoulder is completed by the a’s bowl as its stem naturally progresses south. The work these two letters put in, creates an everlasting but more importantly, a natural effect to the viewer. For those who know, let “the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog”.

Jay-Z Decoded

September 2, 2011

Publisher: Spiegel & Grau
Designer: Rodrigo Corral Design
Cover Art: Andy Warhol

Aside from having notables like Andy Warhol design the cover and Rodrigo Corral Design lay out the inner pages, Decoded is a 336 page memoir of Jay-Z with images and lyrics with his life stories behind it.

In his book Decoded, Jay-Z addresses his assault case. While he didn’t apologize for his actions, he did express regret that the incident happened and attributed it to a loss of control, saying that there was no reason for him to get into a situation that put him and people who depended on him at risk. He also vowed to never get involved in a similar situation again -wikipedia
